Molecular Pathology
Molecular Pathology refers to the analysis of
tissue samples using nucleic acid-based
techniques. These techniques include DNA
sequencing by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain
reaction (RT-PCR). Emerging trends in molecular
pathology include assessing gene expression in
addition to morphology, as well as the use of
gene expression analysis to simultaneously
validate large numbers of targets. Prior to the
emergence of genomics, histochemistry and
immunohistochemistry were used to identify and
study specific proteins. Today molecular and
immunohistochemical analysis are used in
conjunction to provide a more complete
pathologic interpretation.
